Course Description:Algebra 1 and 2 provide much of the foundation for future math courses. The first semester of this course, which is Algebra 1, will include solving equations and inequalities in one variable and linear functions, and then expand on that knowledge with systems of equations and inequalities in two variables. Algebra 2 will continue to build on linear functions with coordinate geometry, proceed to quadratic functions and equations, factoring, and radical and rational functions.
Course Objectives: * Develop good organizational and study habits. * Solve problems by using different methods. * Learn concepts and skills vital for succeeding in this course and future math classes.
Student Expectations: Be prepared to learn: Bring proper supplies every day and have them out ready to use. This means sharpen your pencil before class starts. Take care of personal issues during the breaks so you don’t miss what is happening in class. Use break time effectively so that you will be on time.
Be respectful: Be considerate of others. Don’t speak when someone else is speaking. Use the appropriate volume, language and tone when speaking.
Policies and Procedures: Restrooms:. If you need to go to the restroom, it must be an emergency, or you will have to wait until your scheduled break. Students must ask for permission first; once granted permission, students are to sign out and sign back in.
Dismissal: I will dismiss the class, not the bell. Please remain seated until you are dismissed. The space around your area must be neat and tidy before dismissal.
Testing: Students are to sit quietly during testing sessions until all tests have been completed or class is dismissed. Students caught talking may have points deducted from their test or quiz. If a student is absent for a test or quiz, it is that student's responsibility to schedule a time to retake it.
Attendance: Attendance is crucial to success! Students are expected to attend each class meeting and to be on time. Students with unexcused absences will receive a zero on any assignment missed. For an excused absence, any homework due the day you were absent is due the very next day you return to class. Missed assignments are due the next class meeting after you return to class. . If you miss a test, see me so that we can make arrangements for a makeup test.It is your responsibility to find out what assignments you missed during your absence, and this includes any class notes as well.
Class Rules:Tardiness is unacceptable and disruptive to the class. Please be on time. ON TIME means in your seat when the bell rings, not standing in the doorway or by a friend’s seat.NOfood or drink is allowed in the classroom with the exception of water in an acceptable container (clear container with a twist cap). NO gum.Electronics must be put away, or they will be confiscated and held in the office until the end of the day. This means no cell phones or ipods, etc. are visible during class time (including earbuds).Students must remain in their seats at all times unless they have permission to leave their seat.
Grading:Students will be graded based on the following components.
Grade Distribution Homework and Classwork 40% Tests and Quizzes 40% Final20%
Grading Scale 90-100% A 80-89% B 70-79% C 69% and below F
Notebooks: Students will be required to keep a quad (graph) notebook for this course. In it, students will keep, but are not limited to, mindsets, notes, homework and class assignments. Notebooks will be checked periodically.
Homework: Students will be assigned regular class work and homework to practice concepts and skills demonstrated during class. This will be the students’ opportunity to master the targeted skills. Late work will only be accepted for credit if the student has a valid excuse. All homework assignments will be written on the whiteboard. ALL homework must be done it pencil. If it is not, then only partial credit will be given.
Extra Credit: Extra credit is rare. Do not count on using extra credit to raise your grade. If an extra credit opportunity arises, any extra credit should be an opportunity to better understand the subject matter or show proficiency, not busy work.
